Everyone loves to go on vacation. Knowing what to pack, however, can sometimes be overwhelming. In an attempt to not forget anything and plan for every occasion, a lot of people tend to over-pack. This can sometimes create as many problems as not packing enough items. The following provides information on how to pack light and make the most out of what you bring on your next vacation.

Make a List
To pack light you need to start by being organized. Make a list of only the essential items you need to take on your trip. Making a list will also help you decide what type and size of luggage you’ll need. Make sure to stick to the list. The only things that you should pack extra are underwear and socks. These items don’t take up much room and will help eliminate how much laundry you need to do while on vacation.

Stick to a Color Scheme
Bring items that are mostly blue and white or brown and beige. The idea is to bring several items that can be worn together. This means fewer pieces will still make your wardrobe go farther. It’s also a good idea to stick with basic black as much as possible. A nice black skirt or a black pair of pants will go with almost anything. These items can be worn several times with different shirts and accessories to create a completely new outfit.

Pack in Layers
If you’re packing for colder weather the trick is not to pack heavier clothing but to pack in layers. Layered items can keep you warmer and won’t take up as much room as bulky coats or sweaters. If possible take an older item with you, such as an older jacket or coat that you don’t use much anymore. You can discard or donate this item while on vacation and then have room for souvenirs. When buying souvenirs, try to keep them small. Jewelry is a great choice because it can be worn on the trip home.

Pack Your Items Correctly
It’s important to learn the art of streamline packing in order to reduce folds and save space in your suitcase. One way to do this is to bundle wrap. This involves laying out several items of clothing on top of each other, preferably so the larger items will end up being on the outside. Next, wrap these clothes around a single object, such as a bag. Make sure to wrap the clothes tightly before packing.

Limit the Number of Shoes
Shoes can take up a lot of space in a suitcase. Pick a pair of casual shoes that goes with nearly everything. One pair of dressy shoes in a solid color that will go with lots of outfits may also be chosen if there is room. Finally, if you’re traveling during the summer take a pair of flip-flops. These shoes are comfortable and don’t take up much room.
